Following the instructions and adding my own of reinstalling the common file after i was done  the conversion came up with this.  This file was pulled right from the server with no editing and was waorking and accepting input just fine.  It was front page 2002 that was handeling the upload and download. I dont see how the file suddenly became write protected.

This is a server permissions problem.

You need to make sure you have the correct permissions set on the server to be able to write to the Access database.

Ok i talked to my host provider. He tells me that if the database had been opened by a means other then the following it changes the paramiters inside the DB.
1>connect to the Server with front page.
2> use FP to open the database which passes it alonf to acces wich in turn actually does the opening.

about 7 weeks ago i opened a copy, on my desktop, of the database with access. I later uploaded the updated databas and the forums worked fine for the next 7 weeks.   What prombted my wanting to upgrade to 8.? is the 7.0 forums were starting to get errors and i had not updated in a while. The latest error for example. and still up at http://www.darkcontinuum.com/forum

Microsoft JET Database Engine error '80040e09'

Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.

/forum/login_user.asp, line 171

Even with a 3 month old back up databast i have never opened i still get the write errors. and the provider has checked a couple times the folder and file permissions for me.

Thanks.

This is the same error as you printed in your first post here.

Again, this is a permissions problem, meaning that you can not write to the database becuase the database is set to have only the 'Read' permission set, thus it is 'Read Only' you need to also have write a modify permissions on the database.

Frontpage is always a big problem, and quite often courses issues with ASP applications.

When you have Frontpage extenisons installed you need to use Frontpage to upload to your site to keep the Frontpage extensions instact, if you use FTP to upload it can mess up the whole thing.

You need to contact your web host to get them to correct this permissions problem.
