I've uploaded from v7.01 to 7.7a and I had no problems at all.
I just uploaded every files, and the database kept in perfect conditions.

So...the answer to your question is yes...it's possible.

I don't recall all the changes from 7.01 but in the download is a version history, if you just follow that for the db changes you should be fine.

But please don't double, rather triple post, I deleted the two other post you made being 2 of the same in the same thread.
