If possible on your host, I'd stop the web app before downloading it and restart when it's uploaded again.

When you compact and repair an access db off line and then upload it to the sebsite, be sure to delete any existing .lck file on the website. It tracks who's on the db and what they're doing - where. An existing one won't line up with the compacted db. If you delete it, it will be recreated when the compacted db is first accessed.

Michael, I suppose Web Wiz is the obviously first port of call - certainly looks good to me, and a fair sight cheaper!

380 a year is many times to much. Time to find another host. Hi Borg, thanks for info, I appreciate it.

I found a cheap hosting service, but to upgrade to a MS SQL server it's �380 / year!! Hopefully with mine being a smallish site, I will not run into such problems. I can always archive if it becomes the case.

I foud a ruff average is aound 1MB for each 1000 messages posted.

But beaware that access is a flat file database system and as suchperformance will detertiate the larger the file size. Most hosts willhave a round a 10 to 20Mb limit on Access file sizes.

For large sites you should really look at MS SQL Server, yoi can getsome very cheap hosting options these days with support for MS SQLserver 2000.

I appreciate this is like asking how long is a piece of string, but approximately how large will the access database file grow on a medium sized website? I ask because I have 50Meg, and I'm unsure how many messages (minus image hosting) might be posted before it starts to get a bit full! Has anyone else had problems with their forum growing too fast, and can the database be stored on another server from the forum code?
