Here's an interesting snippet. It seems that my little board is alreadytaking my chosen profession (Towing and Recovery) by storm. So much so,that the top board has started threatening it's members with bans ifthey are caught on my site... LOL

Ya gotta love it. I am not kidding when i tell you I will have 5000members by the end of the year. Believe it or not, the towing industryhad produced a TON of backyard hacks that like screwin around on thenet in between tows. LOL

I've implemented a fairly complicate forum with many members and moderators. There are a number of mods listed here that I would just LOVE to implement. I have not. I've made some immediate changes to protect the members privacy and functionality for the moderator team but am holding off on the major changes until the new scheme is released. I am very excited about what has been posted and based on that, I know that any modifications to the board, especially conditional display based on permission levels will need to be redone... for that reason I will not spend time developing the same thing twice.
 
Borg has posted recently that his peak season in his real job is about over and he can turn more attention to this. I intend to buy the full developer version suite on the day the new version is complete and tested, ($1,200 usd) as my way of rewarding him for the hard work.

IMHO I think the best judge will be you. If you can prolong the upgrade and feature enhancement then you should wait.

Else you have some time in hand and want a immediate solution you can go ahead with the mods and reapply the required mods once again.

Well I opted for the second option. Smile

Well, 8.0 is supposed to have major changes to the db, coding, and permissions system used to determie who can do what.

It's a good bet that many/most existing mods will not work withoutbeing rewritten. If past upgrade history is any indication, it appearsthat many of the more useful yet very complicated mods never getupgraded to a newer forum version.

My rule of thumb with mods is to never do any that you couldn't livewithout. Which for me, means don't do any that impact corefunctionality or use a db field in a way it wasn't intended to be used.For mods that add db fields, be prepared to recreate the fields andcopy the data over yourself.

Finally, the nature of software development ensures that there will bean 8.1 to fix bugs and change the way some things are done internally.

I have successfully implemented a webwiz forum, VS 7.92. It is up andrunning and we're gaining new members everyday. I have a long way to gobefore it's all setup but it's looking terrific and the thousands offriends I have on the net are enjoying the hell out of it.

My question is this. I see a TON of available mods for this forum here,some of which are very good. Should I continue to upgrade my existingversion, or should I just be patient and wait for 8? In other words, AmI creating upgrade problems for myself later because I have added thesemods to my current version?

I'm cornfused. Confused
