mySQL has nothing to do with it in this case, as mySQL support for Web Wiz Forums was added at a later date.

Stored procedures can give extra performance, but in this case the amount of extra performance is so small it's not worth worrying about.

Allot of the SQL queries in version 8 are written on the fly for greater flexibility so that the user can select more options of how they want the pages displayed. These SQL queries can be quite complex and not really something that can be done easily with stored procedures or at all in some cases.

Also, in version 7 it was found that every time a new version was released that would update any SQL Query the stored procedures also needed to be updated which was very difficult for allot of users, and one of the things that Web Wiz Forums is trying to achieve is ease of setup and use.

Even though from version 7 to version 8 stored procedures where dropped for the SQL Server version, everyone has commented on how much better performance is, with many pages have a 2000% increase.

There are many ways to increase performance without having to go down the complex and troublesome root of stored procedures, epically with the complex, flexible, on the fly SQL used in web wiz forums.

Stored procedures can be very good and can improve performance, but it all depends on your situation. I prefer to use the best, and most practical technology for the situation at hand, instead of using technology, just because you can.

Interesting... were your struggles with making the forum work with mysql? I always understood that stored procedures in sql were easier to manage, easier to code and improved performance.
 
I'm truly interested in your opinion as I'm in the process of writing some stored procedures at the moment.

Stored procedures where used in version 7, but they proved to be a real headache and made very little difference to performance.

By dropping stored procedures it meant that other techniques could be used to improve performance even further, also it meant that the software could be allot more flexible allowing for quite complex SQL Queries to be built on the fly.

The other draw back to stored procedures was that it was found in version 7, if a SQL Query needed to be changed between versions it meant that allot of users had difficulty in updating the stored procedures on their SQL Server Database.

Quick question for Borg,

Is there any particular reason to not use stored procedures in WWF 8?

I remember there being stored procedures in a version of 7 that i had installed..

Is it to accomodate for mysql???
