I have got it sorted now.

I registered as a new user and manually altered the mdb to allow that user admin permissions. I have reset the passwords of those that couldnt log in.

Just as well we havent got 1000's users

some more info - nobody can log in using the user name and passwords theyhave already set but yuo can register as a new user.

You never said what version you upgraded from or how. Thanks for the previous answers I have now upgraded to 7.05 access version and althouh everything looks ok and the mdb has all the old posts and forums etc i cant login at all saying unjknown user name and password even when i use 'administrator letmein'
