Now I'm in need of this feature as well.
Reason is,

i've made a shopping site that uses the group id of a user to change his/her status into a customer account. This allows them to only purchase one product, since they can only have one Group ID at a time. If they wish to purchase more products, they will be assigned a new group ID each time, disallowing them to download free updates etc from other products they've purchased.

I run 3 forums atm, all with WWF, and love it.  Unfortunately, a 4th forum required this exact feature.  Given the number of groups and forums it would have been a nightmare to use WWF to get the right people permissions to view the right things, so I had to look elsewhere.

I'd love to see WWF tackle this in the future.

Yes, I have tried the search facility. Unfortunately, I don't have any experience of ASP, so was hoping someone would a mod appearing on the forum pre-built.

No ... thats not good database design changing the tblAuthor table ... as how do you know how many groups you will need?

Create a new table called somehting like tblAuthorGroup which has all the relationships in it

So it's easy to do. Add extra fields to the table tblAuthor in the database and call them group_2 and group_3. Then write some code for the admin tool to edit the profile of users. I have added some extra fields in the Author table. It's very simple to do... if you now how to write ASP. Otherwise ask somebody who can write ASP to make a mod for you.

It is very very common for security systems to be based on users and groups.  It is also very common for a user to belong to more than one group ... and thus inherit the privs of that group.

For example, I have 4 private forums which have a common "theme". Under the current WWF setup, I can assign a group of individuals (ie a "group" of specific individuals) privs for one of those forums.  I cannot however, assign an individual to Group1 and Group2 ... thus I have to add the individual to each forum individually, set the rights etc.

When you get to having a large number of groups, this gets to be a real hassle.  Instead of the simplicity of adding a user to a group(s) and therefore getting all the necessary access rights, we currently have to individually add each user to each forum, setup their individual rights etc etc.

Give an example why somebody has to be a member of more than one group??? Youre moderator with rights or a admin with rights, you can custom your own group. I can't see why you want to do this???
