Hello,

Is there an easy way to upgrade an access version of the forum to a MySQL version? We don't have a massive forum, just couple thousand members and maybe 30K posts.

Thanks

Charles

there isnt an easy way to do it. as in there isn't a script to do it, you have to connect to both DB's and move one to the other.

so have 2 versions and copy the data from one to the other. E:magine do provide database migration services, if you are intrested in a quote please feel free to email my sales Team on sales {At} emaginehosts {dot} com

Hello,

Thanks for the info. When using Microsoft Access is there a recommended maximum size before we would start to see problems with performance. We currently have a database of about 70mb which does not seem to be giving us problems.

Thanks

MS and My SQL are of course better than using access.

the biggest issue with Access is that its a flat file meaning every time someone comes to the site the database is loaded in memory, so as you say you have a 70mb file , if you had 2 people on the site thats 140mb of memory.

if your site is likely to exspand in posts AND/OR members and activity i would advise to upgrade to either My or MS SQL edition.

There actually is an incredibly easy way to migrate from Access to mySQL database.  And I HIGHLY recommend it.  It just did it myself to two WebWiz forums that I had have running for years.  The speed increase alone is well worth it.  Especially if your forum is open to the public where search bots are indexing the site and the forum has been around for awhile.  10 viewers on an Access database make it crawl.  In fact, Borg should just ditch Access and force everyone to at least MS-SQL 2005 Express.

Follow his directions.  It works great.

The key thing here is that the conversion utilities are now built into version 9.  So don't worry about not finding the database upgrade utilities.  This was what took the longest.  It wasn't clear that the upgrade tools were included in version 9, so I wasted 3 hours looking for them online.  Upgrade the access database to version 9 and then follow the conversion process.

I've sucessfully converted a version 7 and version 8 access to version 9 mysql.

So far my only problem is the version 8 to 9 one, the search function does not appear to work.  But I am not sure if that is related yet.

your search related issues i can not see be an issue as it searchs the message field. and thus if had issues with that, you would have issues with other sections too.

do you have a link to where this issue is happening
