    Posted: 04 May 2008 at 7:55pm

Hi,

I’ve just been looking at updating my Active Directory integration MOD to work with 9.5 as the functions_windows_authentication.asp file has changed.

Whilst examining the source code, I noticed the following comment:

'*** PLEASE NOTE, THIS FEATURE IS NOT AVAILABLE IN THE FREE EDITION ****

I am assuming that this is this referring to the integrated authentication function. If so, I can see the logic that if the software is used within an Active Directory domain, then chances are good that it’s a commercial organisation, and as such, the software should be paid for.

Here’s the issue. If it is used within a commercial organisation, then they will probably have firewalls and/or proxy servers which won’t allow a direct connection to verify the licence.

Our organisation is more than happy with the features of the Free Edition, but will still purchase a full licence before implementation on our internal network.

If this feature is going to be removed from the free edition, then WWF will need to validate the licence through a firewall/proxy.

Any comments?

Jono

If you go to Premium Edition Upgrade in your forum control panel and run the test, that will show you if there's a problem with firewalls, etc

I think Wink

Hi MrTWS,

That was the point I was trying to make. Chances are good, that if you're going to use the AD authentication, then you'll be behind a corporate firewall. The current implementation of the server having to always connect directly to the licence server for validation, is er... poor.

If AD authentication is taken out of the free version, then it makes it difficult to justify the use the free version within a corporate environment.

The Free Edition is aimed at home users and hobbiest websites, for this reason the Active Directory integration is not included in the Free Express Edition as this is more something for the corporate environment, which the Premium Editions are for.

Many corporations use Web Wiz Forums is their corporate environments. Those using it on an Intranet with out Port 80 access usually have no problem getting the IT department to open Port 80 for a short while for the 1 time activation of the software and they often contact us for the URI or IP address before they do so.

I'm sure that if you contact your IT department they should be able to allow access for the activation and if you need the URI and/or IP address of the license server please contact sales and accounts and we will be more than happy to supply you this information.

Thanks for the reply, I wasn't aware it was a one time activation and assumed it had to check every now and again.

The only other thing Port 80 it is needed for is the new 'Check for updates' tool, so you would manually need to check for any new releases or subscribe to the Web Wiz Forums News RRS Feed rather than use the built in tool for this, but that shouldn't be much of an issue.
