I have recently aquired an Advent 7079 laptop. I am having some problems with it.
  1. Whenever i try and mute the sound on the laptop, nothing happens sound still comes out throguht the speekers.
  2. Whenever i use hedphones with it sound still comes out the speekers and not the head phones.
i seem to be having some sound issues Confused, the laptop has a Realtek AC'97 Audio card.

the laptop also has Intel ProSet Wireless but in. When I start the laptop i have to press the wireless hard button to enable wireless. Does anyone know how i can get it to utomtically enable. I have checked things like the bios.....

Any help with the wireless or sound issues are greatly appreicated.

By the way, its a media centre laptop so i dont know if this has any effect on the sound issues.

Which driver are you using for the soundcard?

I have Realtek AC'97 surround sound with a nvidia nforce 4 on XP x64.

The nvidia drivers were stable but they didn't support surround sound. The Realtek drivers worked but it takes a while for their stable release to actually be stable. Once it stopped crashing I stopped updating the sound driver.

the driver i am using is the default one that comes with the laptop.

I have found out that I have to mute the Wave Balance to stop the sound, the annoying thing is the mute, volume up and volume down buttons on the laptop and the media remote change the master volume level which has no effect

I have found that one of the devices does not have a proper driver. I checked for drivers on windowsupdate etc... using the update driver wizard.

thanks for all the help and offers for help but I have finally figured out how to fix the error.

I uninstalled the Microsoft WINMM WDM Audio Compatibiliy Driver. Some sites say do windows updates but it doesnt help!!!

I just though i would leave this fix for other people to save them the hassle of crawling the internet if they have the same issue
