Our WebWiz forums became severely neglected while our car club board was undergoing some changes and became overrun with spam messages.  I took on the job of cleaning them up and deleted a bunch of spammers accounts rather than deleting the messages first, not realizing that in many cases you can delete the messages in bulk with the spam cleaner tool.

This left pages and pages of spam messages authored by "guests".  I asked my computer minded son, who was helping us build the new website and move the forums over to it, if he could come up with some sort of batch command to delete all messages by "guests" in a specified date range.  He did, and that cleared out hundreds of spam messages.

However, when I tried to post a new topic, this error message showed (and still shows) up:

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occurred while writing to the database.
Please contact the Forum Administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_save_new_topic_data
File Name:- new_post.asp
Forum Version:- 10.17

At first I thought it was because phantom spam messages were still shown in the "Last Post" column.  I tried responding to the last actual post in the various forums and found that I was able to respond to a post (without getting an error) and knock the phantom spam post out of the "Last Post".  I did this for the entire forum but still get the above message when trying to create a new post.

I know that there is a new version that we should probably move to:

Lastest Version: 12.06
Release Date: 19th April 2023
Release Notes: Improved the search tool, updated the Rich Text Editor, removed deprecated elements

But I am assuming that we need a fully functioning forum to update the software.  I may have more questions about that but I would like to get our forums running again with this software in an effort to prevent data loss when upgrading.

Thank you in advance-

Val

I think the issue could be a 0 value in a Last_post database column causing an error due to replicate values. This could occur with version 10.x if you made the changes to the database that you mention. Try updating to the latest version 12.06 as it has a fix for this issue.

Thanks Web Wiz Bruce!  I'm a little new to this so please bear with me for one more question.  Is there any chance of losing the SQL database while upgrading the forum software?  Do I need to download a backup before upgrading or will the database be maintained with no chance of loss through the upgrade?

Thanks

Val (real name is Bruce!)

You shouldn't 'loss' the database during the upgrade, but it is always good practice to backup the database first.

Don't forgot that we also offer a Web Wiz Forum hosting service where we can do these upgrades for you and fix any issues like your are currently facing; www.webwiz.net/web-wiz-forums/forum-hosting.htm

I can only assume that WebWiz also hosts our forums as WebWiz hosts our website an the forums are part of that.  I have a login to the "Client Area Login" and the "Hosting Control Panel Login" but I don't really see the WebWiz forums in either place.  Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

Thanks

If your forum is hosted with Web Wiz will be able to help you get it running again.

Please login to your "Client Area Login" and create a support ticket and we can take a look.
