Topic: back button returns you to top of page.......... Posted: 16 August 2007 at 9:25pm |

OK, take a typical web site. Go to a large page, read to about half-way down and find an interesting link and follow it away from that page. When you hit the browser back button, it takes you right back to the same spot you left that page, in the middle, the bottom, or where-ever you were when you left that page. Not so with the forums........ if I go 3/4 down the main forum page, click a post to read it, then hit back, it takes me right back to the TOP of the main forum page again. An example on our own site, http://theamcforum.com/forum go there and scroll down to the vendor directory, now hit the back button - you start all over at the top of the main page! Other pages (non-wwf pages) don't do that. Where's the fault? It's annoying for some folks who start at the top and work their way down, go to a post, read it, hit back and you are at the top and must scroll down again.
Thoughts?

This seems to only happen for me when using firefox. If you use IE, it won't take you to the top of the back when hitting the back button. For me atleast, it happens on any page on the web, not just Web Wiz Forums.

Ok, I just did some research and it seems to be a bug in Firefox. You won't have this problem when using other browsers.
Several people have reported the bug on Mozilla's bug-tracking system (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/) and have posted a fix for it. You may want to give that a try, but it will only fix your browser, not everyone elses that uses your forum with firefox.

That is VERY interesting! I'll have to do some more research. The person who complained did indeed use firefox (heh-heh - I went in and looked while he was on the forum) Thanks for the tip. However, one more question - I use firefox myself, ff 2.xxx I go to another forum, and hit the back button, and it doesn't act that way, only with WWF. Is it a coding difference?
OK, I've done searches on bugzilla and see no fix for FF2 or later. This seems to go back years and there are many pages on it, but it's an endless loop of discussion, and I don't see any place a fix was actually posted or available.

You're right. I just kept searching myself right now and did not see a fix for 2.x. I'm almost certain that this is due to a coding problem. I've gone to other forums and it does take me back to the correct place. I'm sure this has something to do with the doctype or header/meta stuff. I'll keep poking around as I would like a fix for this also. It can get very annoying!
