IIRC, the basic technology was developed by IBM a couple of years ago. The competing standards still have some major issues that'll need to be addressed before we see anything like a global standard. My $ on HD DVD.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.

It is NEVER a question about the best technology...

It is ALWAYS a question of who can convince people to buy it (marketing).

Usually the best technology loses because the competition spent half as much on R&D and 2x as much on marketing...

I absolutely agree with you, I don't recall IBM developing the standard, though it was a few others, anyway, even BluRay itself has multiple standards, there are again double layer standards, data stadards and special backup media standards, that is just a pain in the behind. Sure it's nice to have a medium which essentially could hold 27GB or so, would let me backip 3 of my DVD's on one thus having to fight with what format, nah not again. First Beta/VHS then DVD+R/-R now that?

I agree with Blue that HD DVD will prevail, afaik it has a lower data resolution but who cares, most people don't even have TV's that can keep up with it, DVI cannot cut it so you need new cables again, which will mean another standard wat.

here are a couple of things to read that might make you reconsider your initial thoughts on HD DVD winning the format war.

PlayStation 3 to use Blu-ray Disc

Blu-ray disk specs approved
Source: TheInquirer.net

MANUFACTURERS in the Blu-ray founders group said that they've approved version 1.0 of the BD-ROM physical format spec.

That means companies will be able to start selling BD-ROM players, drives and pre-recorded software towards the end of 2005.

What is the specification? You can't find out except by contacting the licensing agent and signing a licence agreement. That, apparently, is part of the spec too.

However, there is more information on the Blu-ray disk site, which you can find here.

The interested parties are the usual suspects - Dell, HP, Hitachi, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, TDK, and Thomson.

I read those too, thus that does not mean anything I think. Also IMHO Playstation will likely loose the No1 place at some point according to non-MS source, XBOX2 will have the potential to beat it, now I don't know if x will use blu or HD or whatever but nevertheless I am skeptical still. I will wait to buy a recorder of either format until I have definates.
