Can't admin, can't register, can login

Users are unable to register and I am unable to (reliably) access the admin interface. I've tried multilple computers/browsers/proxy/no proxy/cookie deletions/etc and I can still get:

Multiple incorrect CAPTCHA attempts, then it (sometimes) eventually works

Sporadic access to admin, but not for more than 2 or 3 screens

So, where should I look to fix this?

Sounds like the web server you are using can not use the ASP session.

This can be due to problems on the server, the servers is setup as a web farm, or you are using load balanced web servers.

If you can not fix the issue, edit the file functions_functions_session_data.asp in notepad and follow the instructions in that file to enable the database to hold the database session data.

Thanks for the pointer to functions_session_data.asp. Will investigate.
 
Now I'm beginning to think that something is adversely affecting the performance of the (standalone) server. Ouch
