Topic: Cookie problems Posted: 26 April 2004 at 3:56pm |
Hey,
We are currently having problems with cookies. If the user is logged in
at www.devjunkies.com but not at devjunkies.com then sometimes the user
will get an error if they click certain links. We basically need the
cookie to be posted to www.devjunkies.com as well as devjunkies.com Is
that possible?
Sorry if it doesn't make sense (I talk jibberish most of the time)
Mart.

Do you mean the path? And if we do set it to devjunkies.com would it be counted as a thrid party cookie on www.devjunkies.com?

not the path, the domain
by default the domain is set to whatever the current domain and subdomain is (in this case www.devjunkies.com). If you set the cookie domain to simply devjunkies.com, it will work at www.devjunkies.com, devjunkies.com, hey.deveunkies.com, or whateversubdomainyouchoose.devjunkies.com. It is not a 3rd party cookie. Third party cookies are cookies posted by domains other than the current domain since devjunkies.com is the current domain, despite the subdomain, it is not a 3rd party cookie.
Be careful however because the browser will check for subdomain cookies before domain cookies, so if you write to both depending on what subdomain you are on, you may get a different cookie.
The code to set the domain is something like:
Response.Cookies("cookiename").Domain = "domainname"
this should be located in the same place as the cookie is set.

or you can just set the dns to redirect anything that isn't explicitly listed to www... something like *.devjunkies.com -> www.devjunkies.com
that way... if the user types
ww323t089gdslgk3t985y456v7gyntiel496.devjunkies.com they still get redirected to www.devjunkies.com
