I get this error when I try to connect to a database on an NTFS partition but not fat32 which makes it obviously a file permission problem but I can't seem to figure it out.  I read the Checking and Setting up the Correct Permissions on the Server section of the faq and am still having problems.  Is there any settings in the properties of the site in the IIS website manager I need to change?  My settings for the .mdb files look EXACTLY like the one in the faq (the last pic anyways and a diff computer name than MYCOMPUTER).  I reinstalled windows in hopes of fixing the problem but it didn't help.  I installed security updates before testing though so maybe a new MS Security patch is causing this? Before reinstalling Win2k I do remember this working on my computer before but don't know if it was before I copied the files to NTFS partition or if it was because I installed a security update.

Could not use '(unknown)'; file already in use
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Could not use '(unknown)'; file already in use.
This is a bit of an odd error that I have never received myself but have been asked about on number of occasions. It usually means that either incorrect permissions are set on the server or the incorrect version of MDAC (Microsoft Data Access Components installed on the server or the version is not correctly installed). You need to ensure the ODBC version you have is 4 or greater.

If you are running the web server yourself then read the FAQ, Checking and Setting up the Correct Permissions on the Server and the FAQ on, Checking you have the correct ODBC Access Database Drivers.

If you are not running the server yourself you will need to contact your web space provider and ask them how to sort the problem out.

Check in the IIS manager that IIS has annoymous access, also check the IUSR account has full permissions on the directory containing the database and the database itself, check the windows temp directory has full permisisons for everyone, also mkae sure the database is not access 97 which no-longer works with the latest drivers from Microsoft.

I had this same problem when using Windows 2000 Professional I'm convinced that it is a problem with this. I've upgraded to Windows 2000 Server and not experienced this problem since.

Thanks for the replies.  I had the problem with win2k pro and when I formatted, I installed 2k server but still have the issue...  I've been using an access database that's from another server instead of starting fresh, so maybe it's somehow storing permissions that it had on the other server??  I know the database is a 2000/2002 DB because I set it up on the other server, and I'm guessing that if it works on the fat32 partition but not the NTFS then the drivers/access DB versions are compatible..  I'm going to check the IIS settings and the directory permissions when I get home and will post a follow up.  Thanks again for the help.

I can't believe I read the FAQ wrong, I was setting the permissions on the File instead of the Directory :(
