Topic: Creating a sitemap Posted: 07 September 2011 at 7:38am |
Hi
I am making a sitemap for my website. What do I need to include? Do I simply list the separate main pages, or do I have to link every subpage? For example, I have over 120 pages showing templates, each with its own display page, do they all need to be included separately? Do I just list the "Fonts" mainpage, or also list A, B, C, etc?
Anything else I should take into consideration?
Cheers

Do you mean a site map for search engines (sitemap.xml) or a site map for people?

I think you are talking about the HTML site map for users. If you have a website with few pages then you can create it manually otherwise there are plenty of free tools for automatic generation and you need to include links of your all pages with good layout in your site map if it is intended for users not search engine..

Site maps provide a dual purpose: They provide search engine spiders easy access to all of your site pages and they provide site visitors easy access to all of your site pages. The difference is that search engines and visitors access your site map differently and therefore there are different methods that need to be applied to creating site map(s) that are friendly for both engines and search spiders. Small sites typically don't need a site map so long as all pages are linked in the main navigation. Once you get into main and sub-navigation menu's then site maps are helpful in allowing search engines and visitors to quickly find anything they are looking for within just a couple of clicks.

Sitemap.xml is inform search engine about url present on website that are available for crawling, sitemap.xml file can gives list of url presents in website. If you want to create sitemap.html then don't need to display all the links, you can display all the links and some of important can also display instead of all.

Maybe not all 120 pages, but most categories & sub-categories. If it's for the user you don't need to overwhelm them!

if you want to create sitemap in xml format then you can create it online itself. by searching xml site map generator in google and putting your website in the required field will create sitemap for your website. or else if you want to create sitemap for people purpose, you can list only important links in html page.
