maybe a silly question but how big do u recommend that css file is?

As im using div's my css file is already up to 40kb, and im half way through to finish my design.

should i reduce it or what would be the max. size that u recommend?

As long as you're just linking to a CSS file and not using inline CSS (i.e. style tags) size doesn't matter too much because the file is only downloaded once, then cached. Assuming pretty much nobody uses anything less than 56k, and only a minority of people use that, your CSS file should take less than a second to load for pretty much everyone, so isn't too bad at the moment!

ok, thanks for that.

i'll try to change some stuff and to be able to keep it below 50kb.
but you wouldn't recommend it to go over 50 or so right?

well it depends on your visitors, if the majority of broadband don't worry at all about it. You could use a CSS compressor to keep the size to a minimum: http://www.cssdrive.com/index.php/main/csscompressor/ it makes it less readable, but you can just keep a file in non-compressed form for editing.
