Can someone please answer some DNS questions for me?

1. For example take the microsoft.com dns record:

Registrar of Record: TUCOWS, INC.
Record last updated on 23-Jun-2004.
Record expires on 03-May-2014.
Record created on 02-May-1991.

Domain servers in listed order:
NS1.MSFT.NET 207.46.245.230
NS5.MSFT.NET 207.46.138.20
NS2.MSFT.NET 64.4.25.30
NS3.MSFT.NET 213.199.144.151
NS4.MSFT.NET 207.46.72.123

Domain status:
REGISTRAR-LOCK

If all the name servers except the last one are down will the ISP dns server look through
the first two and then time out?

2. Are there any web administration tools for bind that can be used for small hosts.

The isp server will look through as many as it can until it times out but some dns servers are configured to only look at two.

microsoft is a very very big company making billions of dollars. they loose money by the second when they go offline... if 4 of their 5 name servers ever go down at one time, i'll switch to linux

plus... when dns lookups are performed they are done twice. microsoft's nameservers are most likely on a "round robin", meaning that the servers are given to you in a different order each time

I know of people who use webmin, but you've got to have a good handle on how Bind works to use it. Best tool is O'reilley's book "DNS and Bind"
