You do not need to have a link to the favicon file as your browser auto looks for it. |
Only if it is in the root directory.... which in this case it is.

I do find though that some browsers, particularly IE onces they cache a favion they never update their cache. You may need to test in a difefrent browser you have never viewed the forum in.

I've tried it to view it using IE6, IE7, Firefox and Chrome on both of my development machines, one of my developers has also tried it on his machine, we've tried it on 2 application testing machines (one we even re-imaged just to test the favicon!) and even on my home machine - none of them are showing it.

There are a few reasons why this could happen, but just to clarify -
Did you see the favicon when you first uploaded the forum? Or now do you just see a blank like folder? beside the address? |
Just the standard IE favicon.

Is your forum part of a site? |
Yes it is. The site itself displays the favicon, we've even tried using different icons to confirm that it isn't getting cached (updating the parent site's and the forums icons at the same time).

Also when you create a favicon you need to create it is an .ico file

AND it's not just the extension - you can't make it with some software. It's got to be a certain size, and format file. Not just any image renamed *.ico will work in my experience.

Spot on and we've got all of these covered.

This isn't a show-stopper, just one of those frustrating little issues you'd rather have working than not have working - especially when the MD wants to know why the applications logo isn't appearing as a favicon - he's sensitive about these things.
Thanks for the time invested so far, if you're able to figure out a solution i'd love to hear it. I'll see what else i can try in the meantime.
Cheers....

No idea if this helps.......
Just checked - My .ico file is in my main site files for my site, but is also in my Forum folder so that it shows up in there as well.

A link to favicon from one of my sites, as it appears in all my files:
<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="http://www.justcheck.co.uk/favicon.ico"> |
There is no reason why if you implement this coding, obviously changing your http address, that the file can possibly miss where the icon is

Yep, I've done exactly the same.
Thanks.
