There is nothing that will prevent your forum from being indexed.
The forum on this site is indexed by google without any problems.

If you forum is protected by group memberships, then it won't get
spidered. However, if a "guest" can view the forum posts, then google
will spider it. Remember, the spiders only see what a browser sees as
source code.
For instance, my major forum's default.asp page is listed on google,
but the rest of the forum is not since you must be a member to view to
the topics/threads.

Are you talking about the keyword meta tags? A lot of search engines (google for one) ignore them. Also, many SE's only do a deep scan periodically, but will start to do it more frequently depending upon how often pages they have previously scanned changed. Check you weblogs to see how often the bots come to visit. Sometimes it's every few months.
If your home page is already listed by an SE, make sure you have a linkon it to your forum home that is not wrapped in javascript.

It also helps to have a robots.txt in the root of the web site as many search engines will read this file to determine what it can or can't index. Do a search around on how create a robots.txt and make one.
