I dont think there is a difference. The payment just goes to help the author with future development, as he has spent so much of his time invested into this. I think it is a small price to pay.

You don't have to remove the link to Web Web Guide at the bottom just because you pay. 

But paying does allow you to have the option to do so.  Some people would want that removed, especially if they are trying to keep traffic local or have more control of what people click on (i.e. click on an internal link or an ad instead).  Or if they heavily modified the code to integrate with their other asp apps (like we eventually intend to do).
