When you post on the forum it gives this error:

“Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server: Arithmetic overflow error for data type smallint, value = 44023”

We think there is code that uses a smallint datatype and out post number has gone above the limits of this.

How can we fix this?

thanks

There is no reason for you to get this error with SQL Server, as forums on SQL Server can handle millions of posts.

The only reason could see for this error is if someone has altered the data type for one of the database fields, but with such few details it's hard to say.

Could you please give a much fuller account, such as file names, line numbers, number of posts in forum and topic, and any other relavent details?

We've dicovered that the error was due to the tblForum table column

Last_post_author_ID

being smallint. However, the tblAuthor table column is capable of holding an int datatype.

Is this a bug as we've no idea who would have changed the datatypes?

I have looked into this as the data type for this field should be set to 'INT'

Is this an upgrade from a version 7.x database?

The reason I ask is I have just checked the upgrade tool and it appears the data type is incorrectly set to SMALLINT in the upgrade tool.

If you change the datatype in the database to INT for this field it will work fine.

Will also look into altering this datatype to the correct datatype in the version 8x to version 9x upgrade tool so others don't have the same problem.

Those who created a fresh version 8 database won't have this issue as the datatype is only created incorrectly in the upgrade tool.
