Anyone know how to copy a DVD movie to your computer in a compressed format?  So I put a DVD in, and save a full movie in xMB.  My friend has some home made DVD's incase you are wondering Wink

There are several tools to do this. I, believe it or not, create occasionally backup of normal DVD's that I take on the road not wanting to take the original. In this case I need to decrypt it first using DVDDecrypt/
To actually shrink it, there are two main tools I use, DVDShrink.com or dvdfab.com
DVDShrink is if a movie is just too large and you want to compress it, dvdfab I use (the old version is much better) when I want to rip just the movie and skip menus, extras etc., after that I still may need to use DVDShrink if it's more then what fits.
Hope that helps

Also, if your "friend" put encryption on his DVD's then DVDShrink will probably handle it. If not, then use DVDDecrypter to decrypt/rip the files to your hard drive first. Then use DVDShrink to compress those files to fit on a single layer 4.7GB disk, or you can re-author the DVD to remove your "friend's" additional languages, director's comments, etc.

After you decrypt your "friend's" movie and shrink it, you can then use normal dvd copying software such as Nero to make multiple copies later on if your "friend" approves of such. I've done this for several of my clients with their home movies, etc.

Also, if you can find a copy of DVD xCopy around, it will do everything in a few mouse clicks. You can't copy a copy made with DVD xCopy but Shrink will do that.

Note: As a parent, I always make legal backup copies of the kids movies. I've bought Shrek no less than 3 times and got tired of that. I purchased  my first DVD burner and now don't have to worry when the kids break or scratch one since I have my legal archival copies (screw the DCMA).
