Topic: Blocking someone Posted: 17 March 2006 at 9:54pm |

I seem to of gotten a flood of racists and idiots on my site at the moment, it's quite frustrating blocking their IP's especially as they are using dialup and it keeps seeming to change, any way of blocking these users more effectivly?

If they come from a country were you don't get any normal users you could just block the whole country.

You might also want to look at the code Borg uses here for the bad word filter and just trash any post that contains x number of bad words. - don't give them any message, just make their post disappear. Giving them a message about their behavior just encourages them to try to beat the filter. Another way to discourage them is to route them to a non-existant post confirmation page - e.g. post_confirmation.asp - they'll see a 404 for that url and assume your site is hosed.

Thanks for the tips! Blocking an entire country isn't really an option, but the 404 error simulation is a pretty neat idea.

The problem with replacing the posts is that it just encourages them to try to beat the filter - how many ways have you seen viagra spelled in spam email? Your filter would always be one step behind. Better not to let them know you're filtering and let them assume your site is hosed - sooner or later, they give up.

Is this on a forum? You see, I had the same problem and I still do... I just keep blocking the user's IP range but I don't think it works well because they could always use free proxy or get a different IP from their ISP... I tried free proxy myself..it works for them! I once suggested in the v8 suggestions topic to implement a better banning system but it didn't seem possible.
