These days M$ ships virtual pc images to its certified learning centers for conducting the class. This eases the job for everyone and savs time in setting up the lap. However the virtual pc images are shipped with compulasry activation, meaning u cant get into windows without activing it. First you have to get the installation serials keys by loggin onto MS website using your partner / cetec credentials.. then update your VPC intallation of windows with these serial keys in order to activate it.

This is where the real pain starts. If one wants to activate over the internet, you cant get into windows to configure your TCP/IP. If you want to activate over the phone, either no one answers phone up at their product activation center or they are closed.

My question to M$, why make stuff soo annoying that ppl start to hate it. Its just a VPC HDD image for god sake.. Ppl are not goin to get anything by pirating it.. Or atleast leave the 30 days WPA limit on so on can go in.. cnfigure their tcp/ip and get it activated over the net...heck make it 5 days even that is fine...

and this learing center is a gold and VLK partner, they buy thousands of windows lisences. Their VLK copies dont even require activition.. cant M$ give preactivated VPC images to gold partners atleast..

and then i dont get the point of updating serials keys, all learning centers are giving the same serials.. and i belive it the same keys as MSDN.. then why cant u frigging ship the VPC image with that serial key..

like blue frog said, M$ stuff is getting more and more like excercies of masochistic self-validation...perhaps by the time vista comes along.. we all will be addicted to B*SM sites!!

What is interesting is that it is possible for the OS to detect the network settings upon install and/or boot.  I recently installed SuSE Linux 10 and during the install process, it found the DHCP server, configured itself to use the internet, and allowed me to download the latest updates for the OS... during the install!!!  I didn't have to configure anything.

At the very least, MS should make it so that it can detect the internet and connect so you can activate it over the net.

If Microsoft is not careful, people will start fleeing to other alternatives.  Example: compare Microsoft Office at $400 and forced activation to OpenOffice.org at $0 and no activation.  And they do almost the exact same thing.

I think the activation thing just shows their greed and eventually it will backfire on them.  People dislike the hassle and are looking elsewhere.

$400 prices also leads to more bootleg copies.

MS always tries to stop them, but within hours someone finds a way around their crap. Just like their first attemp to stop illegal Windows copies from downloading updates from their website, i believe it was only a few hours before someone found a way around it.

Also one of my mates Valid Windows intalls doesn't register as genuine!
He had to apply a wpa killer to his genuine version of windows so that he could download updates. but as he couldn't download updates till after he had installed P2P Software used it to download a crack and apply the crack. till he had done this his computer was a gapping security hole and he had to run AVG etc to clean up the mess.

Also the security problem that applying anything unknown to your windows install.

Microsofts answer....

They'll send out another CD so he can reinstall all over again! Confused

most of the M$ security is security through obscurity.... most corporate VLK seials keys get leaked anyway.. its usually the IT guy who wants to use it at his home to get rid of the activation hell.. since a company IT guy i likely to have a lot of PC's at home.. or it the manager whose son cant get his windows activated (since he gave the bootleg copy to all his friends) so his dad, the IT manager at the company makes him a coy of the VLK cd.. and warn him not to hand it to any of his friend.. but as if that is gonna stop little jhonny.. Mr Little Jhonny spends all night duplicating CD's and in morning he is distribuing them to all his best pals and his IT teacher as well.. "sir.. sir.. this cd doesnt need activation" and acting smart...

and then there are msdn product keys which are available all over the net..

product keys worked well before the popularity of internet.. the win 95 and 98 era.. but by todays standard.. cd keys are not at all fool proof

i can sign in msn messenger with my hotmail.com address all time.. well atleast everytime i want to..but when signing in with my msn.com address.., it doesnt work sometimes.. and often for days and days it will say service not available.. heck..

and what an average user wants in an office client.. a good word processor.. spell check.. tables..header / footer..robust interface.. etc etc etc..all available in open office..
