Okey, I know it's still some time until we'll see next major version (8.5) launched, but I was thinking this topic could be of great value regarding AJAX implementation in WWF.

I've written down places in WWF where I think it would be good to have some AJAX.

Please, please, please: KEEP THIS TOPIC CLEAN AND ON POINT!! All you guys and girls that have suggestions to other places AJAX could be implemented, post it in here and do it like I have done below. That way it would be easily readable for all of us. Don't double post, instead just edit your last post to contain the new information! :o)

If you don't have something to add on this subject (and it don't follow these simple rules above), then DON'T post it either!!! Thanks for all your understanding. :o)

My suggestions:

On user-side:
1. Use if for editing a topic without the need for a page refresh. The post itself would be changed into a editing field where the user cold change his post then hit submit. All this witouth one singel refresh. (seen on IPB and works like a charm!)
2. AJAX search instead of normal form search just as seen on live.com

On admin-side:
1. Presently there is no way for an admin to batch move forums or subforums into a new category, or to batch change and move forums in a category into a sub-forum. Could this be considered in a future version (not very future ;) )? Also, everything that has to do with adminiestering forums, categories and sub-forums could be done with ajax, preventing page refreshes etc.

On the whole forum:
1. replace the existing flash loading script which appears on login screen, search screen etc with a AJAX script. This again does it so you don't need to use a page refresh, and the "Prossing" text on the loading form could be translated into any language without the need of editing a flash file ;)

Also, as a side note: If you guys want to see how far you could go with AJAX then take a look at the following CMS, called MODx. I'm using this CMS and I must say I'm very impressed to see how much can be done through AJAX. It's sooo nice to use!

Live demo that you can pay with on this site: It's worth spending 10 mins on this demo -Borg as I believe it could give you some nice inputs on what areas of WWF that could be using AJAX without bloating the software.

AJAX is rather annoying really, don't get me wrong it has it's place, but it's just a group of old technologies that have been around for years and also used in software from this site for years, but someone has decided to give it a name, and now everyone wants everything to have AJAX and pronouncing it as the web 2.0

If you actually look there is nothing new to the technologies used in AJAX or using the technologies together, what is new is suddenly everyone demanding that everything should have AJAX all becuase it has a new buzz word name.

It's bit like when Flash was new, everyone wanted it, and again, this is another technology that has it's place, but using it everywhere and for everything is just naff.

Hopefully all this unnecessary hype will dye soon so that AJAX can be used in those places where it is useful, and not jst have everything as AJAX because it can be done and has a new buzz word name.

I'm fully aware of the fact that ajax is just a combination of old technologies, but I still believe it has something new to add the internet.

If it was just an old technology then how come people haven't used it for years and years already? (like the examples beneath) Yes, some of the ajax functions have been around for some time, but there is plenty of things that at least I haven't seen in internet software until recent... like the nopage refresh, possibilities to drag a picture into a garbage can for deletion etc.

So I agree with you on that ajax is a mix of old technologoes, but I disagree in the questions of it's future and it's capabilities.

I believe we will see much more of ajax in the years to come, as ajax make things more interactive and less painfull than javascripts, xml, asp etc does on their own.

Forms of AJAX has been used on software from this site for years, the whois search uses the XML HTTP object so that a refresh isn't needed on the domain checker version from over 3 years ago.

Web Wiz Mailing list has used a type of AJAX to report the realtime sending or emails for about 4 years now.

There are also items within Web Wiz Forums that have been in the software for almost 5 years that also fall under the AJAX heading.

i think BroadBand has something to do with it, since nearly everyone has broadband and dialup is pritty unheard of (least to me it is)

so sites like Google Maps are able to work, imagine google maps on dial up, it'd take forever to scroll around.

also, id just like to say Thank You to borg for not rushing to implyment ajax just cause its the latest crazy
i fully agree with him, and also believe using things like ajax and flash just for the sake of it is stupid, yes they have their place but not everything needs to be flash or ajax.

i agree ajax could be used on the forums and could benefit alot of people, but i also believe it could be overused, one things that are pointless.

for example you said the whole of the admin area should be just poor ajax, i personally have a funny feeling about that and aint to keen on the idea

but anyway, id like to give my support to borg for understanding techologies have their place, and shouldnt cross the boundaries and over used!
