In the last couple of days I have noticed - plenty of space on my database - a slowing down of my site My question is the ads that are on the site - I know that I could pay for their removal - do they fluctuate in size causing a slowing down of the loading of pages? Is it that my server 1&1 are to blame? TIA

I very much doubt that the Google Ads would slow down your site.
 
From my past experience with 1&1 I'd say it would be something to do with their servers, but don't expect an easy resolution.
 
What else do you run within your hosting package?

Sorry MortiOli but you are wrong about it, the Google Ads may slow down the site, when there is a high level of band-width usage of the site, or even if there is a big load on Google's servers it cases this type of thing.
It may be also if you made some modification to the forum core that might crash with the ADS, all of this came from a bad experience with the Google Ads within the forum.

I've noticed the Google Ads cause quite a few problems but it has nothing to do with the forum software itself.  They're loaded client side (JavaScript link) so it's completely independent of your forum's server and bandwidth.  In Zone Alarm I can monitor connections and I see the forum page load "hang" frequently when connecting to syndication.webwiz.net.
