    Posted: 15 July 2007 at 9:28pm
Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occured while writing to the database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_Access_loginUser()_update_USR_Code
File Name:- functions_login.asp

Error details:-
Microsoft JET Database Engine
Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.

Recently my host just disappeared.  After finding another suitable host I uploaded all the files that were working perfectly before we shut down.

The error message above seems to say that the forum is in read only mode?  If someone could please tell me step by step what changes I can make to have my forum become operational again I would really appreciate it.  When anyone logs in now they get the above error message ...not to mention it shows all the forums as locked.

I think my locked the forums individually before we put this forum that we use as an archive to bed.  HOW DO I OPEN IT BACK UP?

Please we are desperate.  I can put a new forum up but I can't get it to talk to the database...any database!
Any instructions at this point are greatly appreciated.

The database needs to have read / write permissions on it - looks like it only has read at the moment.  Your host should be able to sort it out for you.

Thank you for your quick reply.  I will try forwarding this message to them...However,  I was thinking that the connection string could be incorrect.  I was hoping for a min-tutorial on how to connect to the database.  Up a level and down a level doesn't help me.  Exact code would be nice.  I have tried the supplied code that came with the forum and it does not work for me.  Perhaps with the new host I have to put the database into it's own folder...I don't know but at least because of your reply I can send this to tech support at the hosting end.

I strongly suspect though it is something that will have to be worked out with webwiz.  This isn't the only data string I have misconfigured ...it is however, the most important one.

Thanks again for your help!

Just a little update:  It must have been on the host end because I sent them the error message and then they apologized and said they would fix it.  They did and everything is fine now.

I was also wondering if anyone has had any success in converting their .asp forum to a mySql database.

I want to work on that next.  Thank again webwiz team and individuals who have come to my rescue time and time again.

You're the best!  Thanks

The error message you mention is a permissions error. It is listed in the common errors documentation that comes with the software.

There is already a mySQL version of Web Wiz Forums available on the download page, which I recommend that you use as Access can only support very small forums with a handful of users.

I am sorry for the misunderstanding Borg.  I meant converting the database information into a mySql format.

I used one of the programs that is mentioned on this forum in another thread I think.  It was Bullzip's MsAccess to MySql and it seems to have worked ... however I can't seem to get the information into the Webwiz mySql version.  I keep trying and perhaps I will let you know if I succeed.  When I inquired about paying to have it done last year no one on your team wanted to tackle the job...so I gather is it rather hard to do if not impossible.

That said,  I wish that connecting the database instructions were easier to follow.  I was impressed how you moved the database to it's own connection file however, I still have trouble moving it sometimes.  Last part of this question to you Borg is:  What physical path do I follow when trying to create a webwiz forum on localhost.

I know I know....it is all explained in the how tos...however, I have been struggling with the information perhaps you could talk about how to comment out the other connections etc.  Mind you it is obvious to anyone listening to me that I do not know how to program...I just use your wonderful forum.

I am just saying perhaps you could write the instructions for a user instead of a programmer.  Sort of an idiot's guide to connecting a database to webwiz.

Thanks for all your help through the years.  Sorry for the long winded reply

Instead you may want to look at the member import tool in version 9, which is a generic tool that will import member data from a different database.

Although it will only move across your members, you could keep the old forum as a locked archive forum for those wanting to lookup old posts.
