I really need someones opinion, so please please help!
 
I'm looking to buy an HD LCD TV, and looking at the 40" ones.  However, I'm confused as to which format to go for - 720p, 1080i or 1080p.
 
Basically all I'll be doing is watching TV on it (Freeview), watching DVDs on it (possibly HDDVD somewhere down the line) and playing the odd (ie, a couple of times a year) games on the PS2.
 
I have about £700 to spend, and am currently looking at the Samsung LE40R87BDX (http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/129764), however I've just noticed this is 720p, but accepts 1080i.
 
I'm really confused, so need some expert advice.  Help!

Another way to compare the two is by looking at their pixel count (pixel is short for “picture elements”, the individually addressable areas of light and shadow on your screen). The 720p format creates an image with 720 lines, each with 1280 pixels, so it has a resolution of 1280 x 720. The 1080i format creates an image with 1080 lines, each with 1920 pixels, so its resolution is a higher 1920 x 1080. Denser pixels = a better picture.

I have a set that does 1080i and I don't see much difference to 1080p sets. I would not get a 720p these days as most TV content (at lease here in the US) is 1080i. 1080p will just be for HDDVD or BluRay and like I said not that much of a diff.
