Couldn't find this issue, but can't imagine I'm the only one...

When someone pastes things from MS Word in the forums, weird things happen with quotes and other things.
I'll deal with quote marks for now..

Single Quote...
'Test'  becomes   â€Testâ€

Double Quote...
"Test"  becomes   â€œTest”

This happens when pasting from Word either direct into a post or using the "Paste from Word" button

You should avoid pasting from word as it will always cause problems as Word hides an enormous amount of code behind the scenes which is copied across when pasting and causes loads of problems.

The best thing if you need to paste from Word is copy it first to Notepad then to the Internet. This will then only copy across the text and loose all the hidden stuff that Word uses.

So there is no way around this problem?

"I" understand about what word does, but many of my members don't, and they're dealing with so much as it is.

I will put a post up regarding this issue and hope most of them will follow. :(

The Pate From Word Tool does make a good attempt at removing allot of the surplus code, but without loosing to much formatting from the document it is always going to be a best effort attempt rather than being perfect.

It does help that the format keeps changing between different versions of Word and also the users settings, the format it is saved, etc.

Yeah, seems Word messes thing up in many ways, not just the Forums.

Oh well, made an announcement to the members, hope they read it.

This problem is a world-wide phenomenon and unfortunately it is not relevant to just forum software, but any CMS systems including huge platforms like Oracle portal and Microsoft Sharepoint.

Believe me (because I work on this particular field as a software engineer) it is quite impossible to completely remove all the unbelievable #*&#&$ that word inserts and the users of the CMS systems copy/paste.

However, there are some WYSIWYG editors out there that do a very good job.

Well, I've told my members to "try" and not use Word, or at least copy and paste it into Notepad and THEN into the forums.

Wish it was different but it is what it is

A not so ideal, but alternative option, is to disable the WYSIWYG, that should paste 'clean text', but will also remove any formatting, similar to what Notepad would.
