Dear all, we are using the Web Wiz forum since quite a while and were very happy with it. Since a few weeks we are bombarded with spam posts. Until now we could handle this manually but now we are just overwhelmed and I fear that our forum will lose credibility.

I am running also a Joomla forum and there we could include a module which would check the IP addresses of a new user. If this IP address was blacklisted, the user could not register.

Is there a similar possibility for the WebWiz forum?
Or any good idea what we could do under the current situation?

I had changed the flood control settings but there were still many spam posts.
Therefore I have suspended the registration of new users.
As this forum is very active we need to find a good spam-blocking solution soon.

Your help is highly appreciated.

The latest version of Web Wiz Forums, version 10.11, has the ability to check when new members register with stopfroumspam.com and if they are listed as a known spammer block the user from signing up to your forums.

The  stopfroumspam.com database has both IP's, email addresses, and usernames of known spammers and you can configure Web Wiz Forums as to which you want to block.

Version 10.11 also has a Spam Cleaner Tool, which is a one stop tool for suspending a spammer which will also remove their posts, block their IP, and submit the spammers information to stopfroumspam.com to prevent them spamming any other forums.

If you have not upgraded to version 10 yet it also includes a spam filter, which can be configured to look for certain keywords and patterns in posts and either block them or require approval of the post by the forum admin.

The page below has information on how to block spammers in the latest version of Web Wiz Forums:-

Hi Bruce, thanks for your fast answer.
This sounds great. We are now at version 9.56a. What would it mean to upgrade to 10.11?
I have no chance to put in a lot of effort right now for such an upgrade.

Does the new version follow the same URL pattern? We have very many entries indexed on google.

Has any around here done an upgrade from 9.56a to 10.11? I really need some real-life experiences.
Thanks for sharing your insights.

Upgrading should be pretty simple. You should keep your existing database and then overwrite all the forum files with those from the latest version. The first time the forum is called a setup/upgrade wizard will start which will upgrade your forums database for you and set the database connection settings.

The page below has step by step instructions on upgrading:-
