    Posted: 13 July 2003 at 4:12am

There are many undelivered emails accumulating in one of my email server folders. It appears that some users are clicking one of the links to be notified of posts but they have not entered an email address.

Whilst WWF cannot check for valid addresses it would be good to prevent entries in tblEmailNotify AND skip the creation of emails when there is a null address.

At present I have to delete these undelivered messages from my email server folder. To switch off the notify option for certain members I determine the author_ID from tblAuthor then delete appropriate records from tblEmailNotify.

Can something be done....is there a better way?

get your users to join by using the email confirmation facility.
For those users who provide a dodgy or blank email addy then suspend their account until you get a proper addy off them
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

The forum won't send an email if the email field for that user is blank.

The emails building up are probally because the user has not entered a correct email address.

KBannon: We don't wish to force email addresses so that won't work.

Borg: Thanks. I'm certain the fields were null but I'll monitor and check if perhaps there was a space or something.

Borg - I still have emails accumulating - it seems to allow a member to select notification of all forum posts when their email address is blank !?!?

You must have a corrupte file as the forum is written to only select email addresses from the database as long as the email field is not null, the only way around this is if the person got passed the javascript test and managed to place a space in the email field, even then there are checks for this.

Very strange indeed. I should mention I used the various scripts to upgrade to SQL version 7.01 so maybe they do something to the database.

Using linked tables in MS Access I found that the email field (on all records) is NOT NULL....however it is not a SPACE either (I got records when I selected on ""). So...I selected all "" records and changed the fields to null to put things right - lets see what happens when new records are added.

Thanks for your response Borg.

This one is still bothering me! Using linked tables Access I noticed the length of the email address field is 0 and the content is "". I think it should be null in both cases. Of couse changing the email field to null (for relevant members) fixes the problem.

BTW I also changed the database default of the email field to null just for kicks.

Despite all of this, all new members are being created by the registration process with an email address of "" length 0. And further, records previously corrected by me to null are being changed to this value on update of an non-connected field (name or whetever) in the profile.

Borg, given this, I do not believe the database is corrupt - can I provide you with any further info ?
