An ASP newcomer needs advice...

Hi there,

I have only just taken up learning ASP. I have installed IIS 5.1 for XP Professional and i have written my first script (time and date).

I want to set up a database for users. Which database would be the best to use? SQL, Oricle.. etc Are the difficult to set up?

If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great

The easiest way to start with ASP database is using a Microsoft Access Database (*.mdb).

However starting with a much harder database like MSSQL, MYSQL or Oracle isn't neccessarely a bad idea because otherwise it'll be much harder to learn it after you already learned an easy database like MS Access.

I'd rather jump in the deep end though, as you said, starting with the easiest method would make SQL harder to learn.

Is SQL downloadable from anywhere? Just a basic version would do!

the only thing "harder" about MSSQL over Access is setting up the actual  program.....

Go with access.. thats where you will need to learn SQL syntax, best way of making tables, relationships, etc...

what backend it is doesn't matter

btw.. might want to check out a site like W3Schools, especially the SQL and ASP sections

Well you can get/download 180 day version from Microsoft. It is not limited version and you can do your stuff. You can also order beta versions of softwares from Microsoft, that will give you some good exp working with all the MS softwares.

You can download MSDe from MS. It's a throttled version of MS SQL server.

Lead me not into temptation... I know the short cut, follow me.
