Delete Old Topics?

I have been experienceing some problems with my message board taking a long time to display and sometimes "timing out".  Is this a problem with over usage (too many people at a time) or is it due to the fact that my database is huge?  I have over 18,000 total posts in my database (mostly one forum).  Do I need to delete those old topics to make things run more smoothly?  Or is something else the root of the problem?

that reminds me of a question I intended to ask but forgot

Does v7 have a feature that you could archive or delete any post dated to xx/xx/xxxx and older? Hosting space is valuable, you know. :)

 

I remember other forums have them called "pruning"

v7 does have a feature to delete old topics. And it has a feature to delete old PMs

Version 6 also has a feature to delete old topics as well.

If you are using SQL server as a database then 18,000 posts is no problem.

If you are using Access 18,000 posts would be around a 15Mb database which is a hell of allot for a flat file bassed database system and allot to load into memory for a busy web server, so deleting old topics would be a good idea.
