I can go into the authors table directly, but will this screw the system up. There are fields I don't understand the purpose of.

There has just been posted a MOD which allows you to edit the username in the MOD-forum.

If its a one time thing, you could just go into the database itself and change it there.

As long as the only thing you change is his or her username, then everything will continue to work. 

(Note: Don't touch the password fields at all.  They are encoded and not in plain text.  Changing those directly in the database would cause you problems.)
