Topic: [REQ] Paid Memebrship of a forum Posted: 13 July 2006 at 6:23pm |
Hi all,
just wondering if anyone has ever done a paid membership of a forum or how easy it would be to integrate wwf into paypal?
i have a free forum but have an opportunity to have paid membership level that would of course give access to a further range of forums and webpages.
it would be easiest if wwf could integrate with paypal or similar so that the member would pay and then be automatically be given a status level that goes with that so they can access the extra areas of the site.
any ideas anyone?
many thanks
JP

It is possible to intergrate paypal ipn into the forums. The best way to do it is to give groups different permissions and people buy the group permissions.
If anyone else is interested in this I will make a mod for you.

I think I have worked out a method that can allow people to purchase membership groups.
If this goes to plan only 2 pages will be need and 1 column added to tblGroups.
But I would like to see if anyone else is interested in the mod before I start

The idea I had is you add a "Cost" field to the tblGroups table. You the have a page... This page loops through the groups table and if the cost field is not 0.00 it allow people to by membership. (The paypal button is dynamically generated). Then you have an IPN page that paypal calls up and that will modify the Group_ID in tblAuthor to the purchased group id. Recurring payments will be interesting. I will have to think on how cancelling a recurring payment works through IPN but it souns do-able. [EDIT]
So you have a total of about 4 files: - The purchase button page
- The IPN Page
- An access database that is seperate from the main forum to log transactions.
- And a config file to hold things like connection strings to the seperate access database and other things like vendor e-mail.

i am not familier with the functions on paypal for how these payments are setup and cancelled, but i supposoe the cancellation could be done manually, it is just easier to let people buy the membership and get instant access to the paid area.
recurring payment because it would be a yearly subscription, or could be monthly i guess, i'll have to look into the paypal part and see what they offer.
is this mod to work with access, or mysql or both?

You will be happy to here that I have started work on the mod.
I am hoping, and I think I am write, that on cancellation the IPN page will be called so the members group can be reset to Newbie or the chosen group.
With subscription you can choose if it should be renewed daily, weekly, monthly or years.
I currently have a page that displays the groups, the ammount it costs, how regularly the subscription has to be paid and a dynamically generated paypal subscription button.
