Is this an original version of IE6 or a stand alone version?

If it is the stand alone version downloaded from the net then it may have some form of advertsing built in to cover development, if it's the original programme then it's being hijacked by ad or spam ware

Do a sweep with a good anti spy/virus programme first

I'd recomend starting with AVG for virus and Adaware for Spy both are free.

I'd also run a sweep with spybot search and destroy as well
