I have Ver 8.02 and wondered if it is really necessary to upgrade to 8.05a when it is likely that ver 9.0 will be out soon. Or should I upgrade anyway because of security issues?

8.05a was not planned... but after a security issue was identified WW responded with a patch, so yes it's critical to upgrade...

You don't have to download the entire forum as stated by the developer:
