Topic: Dedicated Hosting? Posted: 13 May 2007 at 11:31pm |

So...I am hosting a decent number of sites these days and would like to move to a dedicated host. Partially b/c I don't want to keep paying every time I add another domain name, partially b/c I like getting onto the physical server and messing around with IIS settings. I was wondering if anyone knew of an affordable solution? Right now I use WebSecureStores and have shared hosting...Which is great, for what it is. Everything I've found so far has been between $60-$100/mo. Wish that there was an easy way to mount Windows Server on Amazon's EC2 w/out the Linux layer and I would do that... David.

We are actually looking into the possibility of offering dedicated servers ourselves on our www.webwiz.net hosting in a few months.
But one thing I would look out for is memory, most of the cheap dedicated servers only offer 512Mb of memory, and in my experience this isn't enough for Windows hosting.
If you are going to be running a web, mail server, etc. on the server you need a minimum of 1Gig of memory. If you want to run SQL Server, including Express, you certainly would need this as the bare minimum.

-boRg-, do you have any rough ideas on what they might cost and what would be included in the package (such as COM components?)

Thanks for the suggestions. So far, looks like I might just have to shell out the extra cash. Though I have seen some co-lo's that just let you rent out 1U or more. If I could rent 2U's then I'd buy a PowerEdge 2950 and use that - gotta love those beasts. David.

Have a look at the HP ProLIant servers, much more reasonably priced and they do some excellent I U servers.

Not got that far yet, and all depends on the type of dedicated severs that would be supplied. If you just want a dedicated server you mange yourself then you don't usually get any components with it, but if you get a managed dedicated sever you usually get a few. However, managed dedicated servers costs more money, and if you wanted components with the server then this would add more to the cost as would need to cover the cost of the licenses somehow.
