Topic: IIS 5 reboot Posted: 15 May 2003 at 2:09am |
I have a website on my own server using IIS 5 with XP Pro but have noticed that it can no longer be accessed from external PC's. Does IIS have to be restarted when the server PC is rebooted (say after a windows update) ?
Thanks for any help.

Nope. If so it would tell you.
Something else must have changed.. So you have a static IP?
Cheers, Andrew

Yes, and my domain forwarder is pointing to it. The slightly weird thing is that I can access the site by going through the web address on a browser on a networked PC at home (that goes through my server). All a bit odd really unless its picking it up internally some how.

Is your server behind a router? if so you have to set it to forward requests for port 80 to the server....
<edit> or it could be that your iis is not configured correctly, it might not be set to allow anonymous access, you should set it to allow anonymous access and use the iusr account

It's not behind a router, I have a simple internet access connection to it from another PC both using XP Pro. The server is directly connected to a broadband point. I'll have a look at the anonymous access thing. The strange thing is that it all worked OK for a while. If you want to try have a look at www.geraniumgallery.net and see what you get. This might give you experts some clues.
Cheers

It maybe worth checking with your ISP that they allow you to run a web server on your broadband connection, many do not and will block port 80 to stop you from running a web server.

Have you tried pinging it from a machine that should see it?
If www.geraniumgallery.net is the server, then I can resolve it to 62.49.59.161 but I don't get any reponse from a ping.
(Website doesn't work through browser either)

Thanks. That is my IP address. I use a web forwarder to point that web address to my machine. I'm beginning to wonder, as was said above, whether my ISP is blocking it. Anyone know of a way to check that without contacting my ISP?
