    Posted: 30 July 2007 at 2:45pm
We have recently installed the forum software and have been really impressed. I am now trying to control account activation using the 'email activation' function, however this repeatedly fails.

I am not a techie and I have been advised by our IT dept to go down the route of ASPEmail (which is installed on our server) however the requests don''t even make it through - and the browser just throws up a 500 error when a new user tries to register.

The log file shows the following....

any suggestions / help that I can pass onto my IT dept. would be appreciated!

You mention you are wanting to use AspEmail yet the error message suggets that you are trying to use ASPmail.

Make sure you have selected the correct email component from the admin area (AspEmail and ASPmail are different components).

If you can use CDOSYS as it's part of the OS and generally is less hassle to setup.

we have tried all possible combinations (!) so I am pretty confident that the correct settings were applied - my IT dept were hesitant to use CDOSYS etc as I was told it represents a possible security risk (?) - again I am not a techie so have to take their word for it!

CDOSYS can be abused by spammers if the input is not properly sanitised, which is what your hosts will be referring to.

However, Web Wiz Forums, does filter strings that are passed to the email components so this is not a security issue when used in Web Wiz Forums.

Great - thx!
Does the CDOSYS component require the IIS SMTP Server to be installed and active? We did try CDOSYS in our attempts, but this also threw up an errror...

All the email components require an SMTP server.

It's only with CDONTS were you don't specify an SMTP server as that one will only work with a localhost SMTP server.

I understand that an SMTP server is required for all the different connection types to actually relay the mail through, but I need to know specifically if the "IIS SMTP Server" has to be enabled AS WELL AS having another SMTP server (our Exchange server in this case) for the ASPMail and ASPEmail and CDOSYS options.

many thanks!

You don't have to but you can if you want then specific in IIS's SMTP server your main mail server or exchange server as a smart host.

It can actually be quicker to send emails if you do use the localhost IIS SMTP server as you don't need to make a connection across the network.
