I'm not used to being negative; but from what I have seen, Windows Vista sucks! I purchased a laptop with Vista pre-installed, but I got sick of it being slow... I formatted the HDD 2 days later and installed XP Pro instead.
Let's hope that something will improve in this 1st SP.

I've been using Vista on a laptop for the last 8 months as my main computer for working and developing on and it has been slower than using XP.
I've just built in the last few days built a new PC with a 2GHZ Core2Duo and 2gig of RAM to replace the old laptop and it now Vista is fly's along really well.
I think you just need a powerful computer with lots of RAM to run it.
Nice article though, I looking forward to the release of Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 next year.

My acer laptop had Vista preinstalled on it when I purchased it last month. It has 1 GB of RAM and a 2.2 GHz AMD Turion 64-bit processor, but it was still slow!
I'm also awaiting the release of longhorn or server 2008... I have a feeling it will rock..unlike windows Vista.

Sounds like they have under powered the laptop for Vista, you need at least 2 Gig of RAM and really something like the faster Intel Core 2 Duo at around 1.6Ghz or above.
Windows server 2008 is the server version of Vista and will use the same kernel as Vista to keep all MS's OS's inline with each other. It's not designed as a desktop OS as it is Vista but with server tools rather than home/media/workstation tools found in Vista.
I will still use Vista/XP on my workstations, but the company has a whole load of servers for hosting, etc. and are looking forward to using it on some of the servers.
It's just a shame that the Small Business version which is used in the office hear will not be released to around 6 months after the launch of Server 2008.

if this is really the case then Microsoft is not going to sell that much next year. Who on earth is willing to upgrade hardware just to run a 'new version' of windows server? The cost of hardware upgrade would cost companies millions of dollars. This is not an end user Operating System... so home users will not buy it. And if this thing is a Vista-type OS then network admins will say NO, even if it was very cheap... because the things we saw in Vista will scare the hell out of network admins for sure

You would be amazed at the number of servers running worldwide, you see data centres packed full of thousands of them, we ourselves have 8 servers running Windows 2003 server. It's businesses where the money is, not home users.
For server OS's licensing often works differently to home user licensing, so in many cases it's not a case of 'shall we go out and buy it' and many server admins will hold off till SP1 is released.
We ourselves are a Microsoft Partner and pay MS around £250 per year to receive copies of most of it's software for internal business use as soon as it is released and already have the last beta of Windows server 2008.
For our web hosting servers we have to have a Service Providers License Agreement with Microsoft. This means we pay Microsoft monthly for licensing it's software, this also entitles us to upgrade to Windows Server 2008 when it is released, so we continue paying around the same monthly fee to Microsoft for it's licensing.
Also as a web host clients always want to host their site on the latest technology, so from this point of view offing Windows Server 2008 hosting as soon as it is released would be quite important for us.
You would be amazed at the amount of money companies throw at servers, we ourselves have spent around $20,000 USD on servers and server software this year alone, which is tiny compared with many companies who will easily spend that on just one server!

Yup, infact 2008 uses an updated version of the Vista kernel which Vista will be updating to with SP1. I should be getting a beta of SP1 very soon and i'll let everyone know how it goes

I'm quite happy with Vista now I have built a decent Core 2 Duo PC to run it on.
Now just need to find some quite cooling fans to stop the thing sounding like those noisy hair dryer!
Would be interested in how you go with Vista SP1 especially with the new kernel.
