It doesn't have to be legal for something to get a patent. They are
probally patent the way it works, I doubt they are actually patent
it as a password cracker.
Cracking passwords is illegal in most countries, but laws for hacking,
spamming, etc. are not really enforced much in Russia which is why
companies like this and allot of these cyber criminal gangs, mp3 sharing sites, malware
viruses, etc. come out of Russia.
To get around the laws in other countries they market the software as a
forgotten password tool to use on your own systems if you loose the
password. Using it on anyone else's system would in many countries get
you thrown in jail.

Borg I agree... and this is why this article is interesting... is because we'll soon be forced to use no less than 500-bit encryption types from now on!

The more powerful password cracking gets, means that we need to use more difficult passwords to crack. However, I doubt that would stop them just slow them down.
The best solutions, which we will probally see more of, is the use of CAPTCHA, and blocking time and attempt limitations eg. if a password is entered incorrectly more than 5 times no more attempts are allowed for 1 hour.
I know with my bank now, if I put in the wrong password 3 times my online account is blocked and I have to phone up and answer lots of security questions to get it unblocked, if I get them wrong I have to wait 5 days for a new activation code to be posted to me.
