Is there any way to enable the UserName field in a members profile, so they can change their own username?

This reason i would find this useful, is because when a member to our clan site puts in an application to join us, i would like them to change their username to include something like {esc}UserName or {...}UserName.

The {esc} in front of a username would indicate to current clan members that they are appyling for membership etc.  This helps them be identified and people will remember who they are when their vote comes up to either let them in, or not.

I know i can change this from the admin panel, but then it requires the user to log back in and they might not know the procedure for adding tags to their username to log back in.....

I hope that makes sense.

I guess at worst i could always just add some text to the member title that appears below the avatar Sleepy

Changing usernames is not recommended. I would look at your other alternative of adding some text to their member title. This is how allot of other forums also do this type of thing and may work better for you.

Another option and probally the simplest is place new members in a new members group and set this new group as the starting groups os new members are automatically assigned to this group.

Why is this? I get 1 or 2 req's a week for a member to change their username. I would like to at least see the ability fo them to change thier username to be an option that the super admin can enable in the forum setup/config.

Thanks for the reply borg.  I think i will go with the suggestion of another group.

That way i can also assign a custom ladder image to them, that should stand out a bit Smile

I have a problem where new users sign up and an error is reported regarding the Name ID. Since the upgrade I have to manually create a new user account for each new user.  I'll create a new group and assign it as the starting group and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't work there may be another issue related to my conversion to MySql.
Will report back later.

Hi...only me!! lol

The problem if me needing users to have the ability to change their own username via registration.asp is coming back all the time.

I did add a new group which says "ESC Applicant", but each time i do this and change their username to have baby tags ( {esc}TheirName, we have to send them an email telling them about their name change, as the next time they visit the forum, they wont be able to login.

I have looked at changing the register.asp page and can easily display the username text box instead of the string at around line 1575, but i'm not sure what else needs changing....?

Its because of this they i had a horrible thought of cutting my losses and moving to phpBB v3, but i really like wwf forum software, so am persisting with this "possible" change Smile

Why change their username?

Instead create a new group for these users. When you create a group you have an option of showing stars next to the user in the forum for that group or showing a custom image for that group.

This is done in the group admin section and you could simply change that group from having starts to another image which includes the {esc} within the image for that group.

Not sure how changing to phpBB would help as this is a PHP based board which ideally needs to be running under Linux not Windows which Web Wiz Forums runs under, so you would also need to change to a Linux web host.

its an identity thing and a clan thing.  I guess this seems daft and pointless to non clan type people, but its important to clan members.

Our members earn the right to wear our clan tags next to their names on the forum and in-game.

All clans do this.

I am aware that changing to a php based board means changing host and slowly porting all the data across, and that would be my last option..
