I'm considering upgrading my forum database to SQL.. but i have no experience in using SQL. I'm not quite sure how it works.. what would you suggest in this case? I'm sure i can follow the upgrade instructions but i'm just worried in case something should go wrong. Is it safe to upgrade with little or no knowledge of SQL?

Slightly different question - i know on my webhost, if they say they support access it means i can run many access database applications. Is this the same with SQL? Can i for example convert all WW applications to support SQL, on one SQL server? (hope this makes sense)

Access and SQL Server are very different.

Access is just a file which you place on the server and then read and write to that file. SQL Server is completely different, your host will generally give you 1 SQL Server database which they create on the server for you, you then connect to the database server, so there is no flat file like in Access.

SQL Server is much more powerful and robust compared to Access, but is not as simple for the novice user to use. You generally use tools like Micrososft SQL Server Management Studio to connect to and manage your database on the remote server.

To move a database from Access to SQL Server, in Access there is a database upsize tool to upsize the database to SQL Server. I find that the Access 2007 version of this tool works very well.

One other option is to take out one of our hosting packages starting from £3.99 a month, these include SQL Server 2005 64 bit, with a fully installed and managed Web Wiz Forums Premium Edition. We can even take your old Access database and upsize it to SQL Server for you at no extra cost.

I've been taking a good look at your hosting site and is still giving it some serious thought, would like a bit more disk space though.. I'm already at nearly a gig with my current host. Hey do i get a discount seeing as i already have a fully paid for license? Smile The managed option for WW forum is certainly tempting... does that mean upgrades are automatically implemented or would I still need to do that?

Also, on a side note.. do you do Bespoke apps? Say maybe a CMS for eg..

Extra diskspace is available.

Upgrades are not automatically implemented as some users will have made modifications that they do not want overwritten, but are done for free, you just need to request an update from support and let us know if you have any special setup and then we take care of the rest.

Sorry don't do custom bespoke apps, and something like a bespoke CMS from the groud up would be many months of work if developing, so I doubt you would find someone to develop one for you for less than £4,000

Cool stuff... Actually the more i think about, the more WWHost sounds like an attractive option, I've used your applications for a good few years now. I think you've up-ed so of your resources as well cos initially i remember ruling you out based on that. Anyway... i don't know if you want to take this conversation of forum but i'd be interested in seeing how we can get a plan i'm comfortable with. Couple of questions...

On your "why choose us" page you say: "Guy's and St. Thomas NHS Trust, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Void Acoustics, and many others choose us for their web hosting services." So is the PWC site hosted on Web Wiz?

Also, on the pro-option you allow for 10 websites. How are the resources shared? For example, will the 100 mailboxes be shared amongst those 10 websites?

You mention extra disk is available but i don't know i f you mean available for purchase, or if we can customise the plan. It would be good to know how much it costs to add optional extras for example extra bandwidth or mailboxes.

I agree. I upsized a site a couple weeks back and its running SQL just fine!

The amount of resources such as diskspace, and email accounts was increased recently, however the site was only updated to reflect this in the last 12 hours.

For example with the Pro Web Hosting Package, you get 75 Gig of bandwidth, 5Gig of Diskspace, 3 x 250MB SQL Server Databases, 500 mailboxes, etc. You can have up to 10 web sites on this package and share these resources between the sites as you see fit.

The main PWC site is not hosted on our systems, but we do host around 8 forums for them which are used internally by their 10,000 staff worldwide.

You can purchase extra bandwidth and diskpsace, but generally if you go over your allowance for a number of months you are only asked to upgrade to the next plan above. If you exceed the resources of the Pro Package then really you should be looking at a dedicated server, as your site would have outgrown a shared hosting package, and even these hosts which quote unlimited resources would not take a site that busy on a shared hosting package.

We are an HP Partner so we also use very powerful HP ProLiant Intel Quad-Core servers, which allows us to use GZip/Deflate compression which compresses your web pages, makes them load faster, and reduces your sites bandwidth by as much as 75%. This means we often find that sites that use over 50Gig of bandwidth per month have forums which have between 60 and 300 active users at all times.

Great, I think i'm sold, site is not that huge but i want to allow enough to scale up. I guess I should contact your sales people now.. I'm going to need to upgrade the database as soon as possible anyway. I don't know if you have lead times for that. I definitely want to get it up and running by next Monday if possible.
