I have noticed that after installing SP3 on 3 of my computers, the computer will freeze up for a long period of time...

Just now, I decided to reformat and reinstall XP on two of my PC's and applied SP3, and it happened again... I did this format/reinstall just to make sure the freeze was not caused by a virus infection or other problems. On my laptop, however, I did not apply SP3 after I reinstalled the OS... and it never froze...

Can anyone, who had the chance to install SP3, confirm that this is true?

i have Service pack 3 on a couple test computers and live laptops with no issues.

from what i remember but don't quote me SP3 is just the collection of security patchs and bug fixes within XP.

My wife is running XP with SP3 and she has had no problems either. However, I was under the impression that before installing SP3 your computer had to be up to date with previous updates/patches etc, and SP2 already installed

Maybe you should reformat again sadly, and just leave windows to update itself accordingly. I know once I rushed in with updates, and got problems

Thank you guys...

dj air, yes it is... but "with a few new updates that were not previously available".

MrTWS, I think this would work... I did it differently though.. I uninstalled SP3, and installed just the individual (some 90 updates) and left it like that. It works OK... One of my PC's still has it with no issues... but the other two were giving me headache for freezing up like that.

There has been all kinds of issue with the SP3.. For what I know of it, There were some type of security issue in the software.. A Few bugs were also included in the update.. some files were not compatable with others.. Since then Microsoft has came out with more updated on the SP3 and all bugs should have been fixed... I for one all my laptops ran just fine before they fixed the bugs but everyone of my desktops for some reason had the freeze.. Would if there was a power issue between the two.. But all updated should be fixed
