What are the most effective and most popular e-commerce tools? I think the shopping cart kind of scares people away but it actually works and opens the possibility of buying something when browsing. I also think that probably advertising in every available site is not that positive for any product.

I found that Zen Cart is one of the best open source e-commerce tools available - especially when you start looking at the adds-on to do just about anything (one of the best is to have your products automatically listed on Google Shopping.

 i know clients that use SEO-cart, X-cart, and Joomla's shopping cart. They are all fine. Adding Google Checkout is a plus
