Well am using iportalx a portal system that off the webwiz. Am increasingly faced with spammers registering on my forum despite IP Ban and they dont seem to stop despite Captcha and or the usual security option.

So i just thought of something today and i hope its one as good as i think it possibly could be - and the idea is to send some false activation code link along with the one genuine link that a human need to click in order to activate the account ( say 4 false link + one genuine link ).

The idea being if the bots click the false activation code then the email id is automatically added to the ban list; while clicking the genuine link requires human challenge to understand and then click it - the human challenge could be as simply as " click the red colored activation link" or randomly asking one to select the particular numbered activation link.

Is this idea workable and of any help? Big smile

I believe that IPortalx uses Web Wiz Forums version 7.x

Allot has been added since version 7 to prevent spammers including the use of a new CAPTCHA security code created on the fly instead of using a library of just 200 images that version 7.x used. There where also issues with the IP banning system with version 7.x which have now been fixed. With version 9.x you can go as far as having the email activation sent to the forum admin so that the user can be checked out by the admin before the account is activated by the admin.

Your idea is a good idea, however if you have CAPTCHA enabled on the registration form with email activation enabled then a bot can not signup anyway. So would be a rather redundant system that would probably course support issues with people not fully reading the email and clicking the wrong link and getting their email banned.

What you tend to find now a days is that sites with CAPTCHA enabled that most of the spammers are humans, so the extra protection in the activation email that you suggest would not work. Often those people who spam employ people in sweat shops on $1 a day to spam as many sites are possible rather than using automated bots to do the sapmming.

You would probably actually be better of using IP databases such as GeoIP to ban the IP addresses of developing countries where these human spamming sweat shops are usually located. However, you may also be banning people you want to enter your forums as well.
