Topic: Timeout for editing own post Posted: 10 June 2009 at 6:05pm |
Hi, I have searched and checked through many topics but failed to find what I was looking for. New to WWF 1. How am I able to set a timeline so that members can only edit their post within a stipulated time frame? 2. How can a Moderator edit a post and not to display "Edited by" at the bottom? 3. Whenever a post is made, the Emoticons, when selected, will appear after the last alphabet in the post (PM too), how can I improve on that? Just like WWF, when u select an Emoticon, it will appear at where the cursor is. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure that this would be possible. If you did not want users to be able to edit or delete their own posts, then my advice would be to remove that option in your admin panel under the particular group that you want it to apply to. I tend to allow users editing rights after so many posts, but not deletion rights - it's up to you
2. How can a Moderator edit a post and not to display "Edited by" at the bottom? |
In forum files find edit_post.asp and on these lines -
'****************************************** '*** Edit Post Update *** '******************************************
'If we are to show who edit the post and time then contantinet it to the end of the message If blnShowEditUser Then strMessage = strMessage & "<edited><editID>" & strLoggedInUsername & "</editID><editDate>" & internationalDateTime(Now()) & "</editDate></edited>" End If |
Change to
'If blnShowEditUser Then 'strMessage = strMessage & "<edited><editID>" & strLoggedInUsername & "</editID><editDate>" & internationalDateTime(Now()) & "</editDate></edited>" 'End If |
The ' stops it from working those lines, alternately you could just remove them, but I would keep them and check it

There is no reason why this should happen as I've just posted a within the lines where I want it to appear

Hey Dude, thank you so much for the fast reply. To stop members from editing their post will be rather harsh. And to allow them to edit it after a couple of days will be bad too. I just edited a member's post and he re-edited it and removed all his bad words.....lol. I know that some forums has the cut-off time limit for editing of own post (10 mins), but well, I have to embrace what we have here. With regards to the Emoticons issue, it is happening in our forum. I would be nice if it is like WWF...

Your welcome Andrigues I'm only guessing on the editing posts bit (so others may be able to give a better answer) but the hiding who edited what works, and perhaps allow users who have say posted 20 times then to edit posts. It depends why they need to edit them? A spelling error is one thing - but it depends on why they edit them too

Yep - that's why it is better to 1. Have good moderators 2. Prevent them from editing posts until they behave properly You might want to check your bad word filter and add as many as possible as I'm sure there are a lot of swear words around
